More on Referencing and schon’s model

Reflection in action

  • Need to be more focused on referencing and concentrate on it
  • Not leave it until the last minute
  • Double check it is correct

Reflection on action

  • Do it as I go along
  • Get someone else to check it is correct
  • Have notes next to me on how to reference different things
  • Talk to other people about it

schon’s model.

Schön (1991) presented the concept of 'reflection in action' and 'reflection on action':

Reflection in actionRelection on action
  • Experiencing
  • Thinking on your feet
  • Thinking about what to do next
  • Acting straight away
  • Thinking about something that has happened
  • Thinking what you would do differently next time
  • Taking your time

More on presentation techniques and Kolb theory

1 -      Concrete experience

Doing a presentation isn't a new experience however it's an experience I am not comfortable with. Personally I feel every time you do a presentation it is a new experience because you never really know how they are going to go, no matter how many time your practise them.

2 -      Reflective observation

Looking back on the presentation there are a few things I would now change. The timings being a vital one! You don't want to look as if your rushing it, however you don't want to run out of time. Also for most of the powerpoints I did, there wasn't a huge amount of words on the slides however personally I feel there was still too many which can be distracting.

3-      Abstract Conceptualisation

From the reflecting I can tell I've learnt a lot, especially when it comes to improving them. I've learnt the most important thing about presentations is getting the timings spot on. Also I've learnt the more I do them the more my confidence grows.

4 -      Active Experimentation

Now from learning all of this, it means next year when I come to do presentations I can be a lot more confident in myself and in the presentation I would have created.

Kolb's theory

David Kolb published his learning styles model in 1984 from which he developed his learning style inventory.                             “Learning is the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience” (David A. Kolb, 1984).

    1. Concrete Experience - (a new experience of situation is encountered, or a reinterpretation of existing experience).
    2. Reflective Observation (of the new experience. Of particular importance are any inconsistencies between experience and understanding).
    3. Abstract Conceptualization (Reflection gives rise to a new idea, or a modification of an existing abstract concept).
    4. Active Experimentation (the learner applies them to the world around them to see what results).

More on How to write a report and Gibbs Theory

My other reports, and how they have improved after the first one.
A description of what happened was, I would always look back on the reports I had already done and have the improvements of them, so I know how to better myself. I would keep reading the report question, so after I had done half of my report, I knew if I had answered the question and not left out an important part.

How I felt about writing reports and how I now feel. I feel now a lot more confident to go into the second year and to know the style of writing a report. At the beginning I didn't like writing them, however  not I'm happy to. If I am honest I prefer writing a report than an essay now. I find them a lot easier to do and you can get more information into them.

There were obviously good and bad points about writing reports and there will always be more I can learn and more ways I can improve. My timings were always good and I never left things until the last minuet. This meant I stayed calm and didn't stress too much when it came to deadlines.

What I can take away from this? The things that helped was definitely not stressing about the deadline and getting everything done. If I can stay calm then more work will get done and to a higher standard. Like mentioned before I feel a lot more confident about them  and I will continue to improve.

What I have learnt is a key factor that will help me through life, many companies ask for reports throughout the work so knowing how to lay them out and do them professionally helps. Next time I do a report I am going to get someone else to read it to make sure it is the best I can do and for ways to improve it.

An action plan is to finalise everything so it all works together to make the report stronger, also like mentioned before get someone else to proof read it before submitting it.

Gibbs theory

Feelings

Discuss your feelings and thoughts about the experience. Consider questions such as: How did you feel at the time? What did you think at the time? What did you think about the incident afterwards? You can
discuss your emotions honestly.

Evaluation

For your evaluation, discuss how well you think things went. Perhaps think about: How did you react to the situation, and how did other people react? What was good and what was bad about the experience? If you are writing about a difficult incident, did you feel that the situation was resolved afterwards? Why/why not?

Analysis

In your analysis, consider what might have helped or hindered the event. You also have the opportunity here to compare your experience with the literature you have read.

Conclusion

In your conclusion, to think could have done anything else; what you have learned from the experience; consider whether you could you have responded in a different way. If you are talking about a positive experience discuss whether you would do the same again to ensure a positive outcome. Also consider if there is anything you could change to improve things even further. If the incident was negative tell your reader how you could have avoided it happening and also how you could make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Action plan

Action plans sum up anything you need to know and do to improve for next time. What can you do which means you will be better equipped to cope with a similar event?
